Mike Sparrow is a long time resident of the Alberni Valley and has spent much of that time volunteering in Cherry Creek. Mike was a member of the Cherry Creek Salmonoid Enhancement Society and helped restore Cherry Creek habitat for the fall spawning season.

In addition, he has dedicated 30 years as a volunteer firefighter, has a Diploma in Fire Service Leadership, and 12 years as Fire Chief for Cherry Creek.

Mike has two red seal trade tickets (Machinist and Millwright) and has worked in the Valley for decades in heavy industry, light industry, and long-term health care services.

What the Electoral Area Director does

If you live in Beaver Creek, Cherry Creek, Sproat Lake, Beaufort, Bamfield or Long Beach, you don't have a mayor or council. Your local government is the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD), and you elect one Electoral Area Director to sit on its Board.

The ACRD Board is made up of six elected Electoral Area Directors (one per area), directors appointed by the councils of Port Alberni, Tofino and Ucluelet, and representatives appointed by member First Nations.

An Electoral Area Director is the only elected voice for their area. On the Board and its committees they vote on:

Land use planning, zoning and building inspection for the electoral areas
The ACRD budget and the property tax requisition for each service the area pays into
Regional services: solid waste and the Alberni Valley Landfill, the Alberni Valley Regional Airport, regional parks and trails, emergency planning, 911 and fire dispatch
Local services specific to their area — community water systems, fire protection agreements, recreation commissions, sewer
Grants-in-aid and community works funding for their area

Directors also sit on the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional Hospital District board. Some ACRD services are voted on only by the directors whose areas participate in them, so a director's vote can carry real weight on the things closest to home.
